Amen to David! You are so RIGHT! And yes, I have played Bach. He must've had a very dull life. Poor guy.

Well, my only attachment to Bach is that Mrs. D said I played it better then Anna AND Becca -- and that's saying something! But you know, I'm not one to criticize composers, because at times they all sound the same! I will say he did not have as much fire and gusto to his stuff, but then again his pieces don't make your head hurt (unlike that R guy Becca likes to play). So I guess it would all depend on if you wanted lullaby music or battle music.:)

I have played Bach, I am playing Bach and, unfortunately, in the future I will probably play more Bach. I know Bach. I have listened and played Bach all my life. Bach is boring! It's as simple as that. It all sounds the same. And what makes it worse, Bach is really hard to play (and it sounds easy).

Bach had 20-something children. You would think that would make it more interesting, but it isn't. Bach never leads you to a conclusion, it just goes...and goes...and then it stops.

Yum Yum,
I can't believe Mrs. D would say that. Sometime I'll have to hear you play it! One of the only times I really enjoyed Bach was when Anna played it. I've never heard Becca play it, and I don't want to.

BACH!
A colossal syllable, one that makes composers tremble, brings performers to there knees, beatifies the Bach-lover, and apparently bores the daylights out of everyone else.

bach is boring because it's complicated with out expression. it's like an expression of nothingness. i don't know how to say it but bach is hard to play and it's almost empty except maybe the skill you learn from playing it. he wrote great exercises if that's what you want to play.

Thats a good way of putting it Tyler! His music is like a bunch of exercises. Good for the improvement of the skill of the player.

Bach is boring. Yes! You're right! It's true! I am playing Bach right now, and it just goes to show how much I hate Baroque music. Some Mozart is good, but BACH IS BORING!

Mozart is from the Classical period, FYI.

Bravo! Bravo! to the maestro! David, I think your alliteration could be changed to Bach=Brilliant and it would be a vast improvement.:) There's very little chance that I'll persuade anyone contrary to what they've already expressed, but hopefully I'll make my case.

I have to admit, I didn't appreciate playing his music until the past three or four years, but I consider him one of the largest stones in the foundation of classical music as we know it. Once you get beyond his preludes and fugues, you might find a few more things to interest you. His Italian Concerto (though maybe overplayed - and usually badly) and French and English Suites are wonderful examples of his versatility. If you were to explore his choral and ensemble music, there would be even greater examples of his genius. Such things as the Brandenburg Concertos are undeniably fun. :)

Granted, it can feel like he's only taking you through exercises. (I think it was Chopin who regularly played through the Well-Tempered Clavier to loosen up his fingers... and probably his mind, too. :) Playing Bach well is hard. Adding expression to Baroque music does present unique challenges, but to be able to do something difficult, and do it well, is one of the high points in maturing musically. (I am not of the purist point of view. Dynamics and flexibility of tempo are not contrary to the composer's original intent.)

Enough expositing on this subject.

Hi, just happened to come across your blog through the pp forum so I figured I'd better leave my two cents on the subject.
Bach might be boring to the listener, but in my opinion, it has that little nitch that no other composer has ever filled. I've played it on both piano and cello and yes, it is hard to learn, but I think there is something very satisfying about it.
I learned this awhile ago and thought it was interesting: Did you know that most of Bach's works are in three parts? Bach was a very religious man so therefore he made most of his pieces in three parts signifying the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Hi Abbey! Thanks for visiting.

I think that string players tend to like Bach better than painists.

Maybe chance. Maybe pianists have better brains. dunno

I personally don't think Bach is boring. Some is very beautiful and fun to play and listen to. By the way, David, you misspelled "painist." :)

But I spelled it right in the second half, so it doesn't matter. ;)

Well, David, if you got to play the Bach cello suits, you would like it too. lol Actually, I like piano pieces by Bach sometimes better than Bach for cello.

I can see how you would like his cello stuff. It's pretty neat. I can't believe you like Bach piano pieces better than his cello suites. Poor Abbey. Peep-Bo and I will have to fix you.

ok, ok, bach isn't boaring...

...it's really really really really boaring to play and listen to. but some real cool sounding things can come from taking about 2-3 measures of some of the bach "exercises" and loop them... only changing the chords and maybe transpose it about every 4 times. then loop that and you have a real cool rif. note this only works with some and maybe verry few of his "exercises". note don't play it on the piano it will drive you insane...get a stringed instrament to do this as they can add the "vocal" sound that bach and piano's lack.

If you want some cool music listen to John Williams:Summon the Heroes: The Olympic Spirit.

Bach is definitely boring. Also, some other music that is great is John Williams Greatest Hits 1969-1999.

Bach=boring (the people on the radio say Bach like their choking). Definitely! It all sounds the same. Bach is one of those people that gets on my nerves. It makes me mad. Music from the Romantic period is totally the best. It fills you with the shivers and is so luscious and juicy (at least most of it is). Who made up
harpsichords? GRRRRR. That is what really gets on my nerves. I'd better get off or this could get a lot worse.

Bach is boring
None of you mentioned what I feel is missing in his music and that is a soul or some feelings, whatever they might be.
Obvisously there runs a straight line from Bach to Kraftwerk. German automated robotic music !
